Idaho disabled Veteran property tax reduction

If you are an Idaho Veteran rated 100% service-connected, you may qualify for Idaho's Veterans Property Tax Reduction. This page explains what the benefit is worth, who qualifies, and how to apply.

How Idaho's Veterans Property Tax Reduction works

Idaho's Veterans Property Tax Reduction reduces the property tax on your home and up to one acre of land by up to $1,500 per year. It is a capped reduction applied to your tax bill, not a full exemption that zeroes out the bill. Unlike Idaho's general (income-based) Property Tax Reduction "circuit breaker," this Veterans benefit has no income limit.

Who qualifies

To qualify for the 2026 benefit you must be recognized by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs as 100% service-connected disabled, or paid at the 100% rate due to individual unemployability (IU), as of January 1, 2026. You must own and live in the home as your primary residence (it must have a current homeowner's exemption), and a mobile home qualifies.

Veterans rated below 100%

The Veterans Property Tax Reduction requires a 100% rating. A Veteran rated below 100% who also has limited income may instead qualify for Idaho's general Property Tax Reduction (the income-based circuit breaker), which is a separate program with its own income limits. We can point you to the right one.

Surviving spouse

An unremarried surviving spouse of a qualifying Veteran may continue the benefit. Confirm current surviving-spouse rules with your county assessor or the Idaho State Tax Commission.

How to apply

File with your county assessor's office (or the Idaho State Tax Commission) by April 15. Bring a current VA letter confirming your 100% service-connected rating or 100% IU as of January 1, plus proof that the home is your primary residence with a homeowner's exemption.

How this fits with your VA loan

When you buy a home in Idaho with a VA loan, your lender estimates property tax as part of your monthly payment (the T in PITI). If you qualify for the Veterans Property Tax Reduction, your annual tax drops by up to $1,500, which lowers the tax portion of your monthly payment and can improve your debt-to-income ratio. We can structure your pre-approval so the reduction is reflected accurately and you do not lose buying power.

Common questions

Do I need to be 100% disabled to qualify?

Yes. Idaho's Veterans Property Tax Reduction requires a 100% service-connected rating, or payment at the 100% rate due to individual unemployability, as of January 1. A Veteran rated below 100% with limited income may instead use Idaho's separate income-based Property Tax Reduction.

How much is the Idaho Veterans Property Tax Reduction worth?

The benefit reduces the property tax on your home and up to one acre by up to $1,500 per year. It is a capped reduction, so it lowers your bill rather than eliminating it entirely.

Is there an income limit?

No. The Veterans Property Tax Reduction for 100%-rated Veterans has no income limit. The income limit applies only to Idaho's separate general Property Tax Reduction circuit-breaker program.

Does the reduction transfer if I sell and buy a new home?

You reapply for your new primary residence. The benefit attaches to the home you own and occupy, so each new home needs a fresh application with the county by April 15.
